Potential benefits of therapeutic exercise in the recovery from chikungunya symptoms
Main Article Content
Abstract
The musculoskeletal sequelae of the chikungunya virus can have a significant impact on healthcare systems for months or even years after the acute phase. Therefore, this opinion piece has discussed the potential of therapeutic physical exercise as a complement to the rehabilitation of affected patients. Appropriate exercise (acute, subacute, and chronic phases) is suggested to improve joint mobility, relieve persistent pain, strengthen weakened muscles, and prevent the progression of disabling symptoms. It is argued that the incorporation of exercise and interdisciplinary cooperation supports a faster, safer, and more sustainable recovery that improves the quality of life of the individual patient. Finally, the article highlights the relevance of clinical research for individual rehabilitation protocols and its relationship with functional evolution in patients with post-chikungunya sequelae.
