Abstract

Eastern cultures have a particular conception as to the management of war-related strategic problems which qualitatively differs from that predominant of the Western Hemisphere. Eastern strategic tradition, particularly China´s, has its most concise representation in the book “The Art of War”, attributed to Sun Tzu. The game of Go, which originated in ancient China, presumably works under the same principles and concepts given by Sun Tzu. Therefore, its practice constitutes a privileged way to access these conceptions by means of the player´s direct experience. Bearing in mind the content of these principles, Sun Tzu´s thinking was synthesized by presenting five conceptual pairs that answered to the yin-yang polarity characteristic of Chinese philosophy, and those pairs proved to apply to the strategy of a game of Go.
